Arboretum

Isaszegi road, Állami telepek (the train stop for the Arboretum)

In the 1920s and 30s the arboretum was considered the most important botanical garden in Hungary. Founded in 1902 on 190 hectares with the purpose to adopt tree species that would prove suitable to populate the Hungarian great plain with, the arboretum was named Meadows of Archduke Joseph. The arboretum suffered great damages during World War II so in 1960 an important plantation program was started by the Hungarian Forest Research Institute to plant a wide variety of species in the arboretum. As a result the visitor will find some 110 conifers and 650 deciduous species and subspecies can be seen in the arboretum. The collection of shrub and tree species lies on 350 hectares, 90% of which is research area and 10% is open for the visitors. This area is a park so it is easy to walk. The arboretum is home to the collection of ornamental tree and shrub species parent stock registered by the Hungarian National Institute for Agricultural Quality Control. The collection is made up of 185 taxa with 407 species. The arboretum has been open for visitors since 1989. Wheelchairs are welcome.
Opening hours:  Mondays to Sundays 8.00 am to 4.00 pm, closed in December
