Fadrusz Cross

Premonstrant cemetery

In 1892-93.  János Fadrusz's the Crucifiction of Christ was awarded the prize of the National Art Exhibition. János Fadrusz (1858-1903) was  a major sculptor of the 19th  century Hungarian historical sculpting. The full size statue showing the suffering of Christ is so realistic that a number of duplicates were made all over Hungary. In order to get this realistic effect, the artist had himself bound to a cross and thus he could make a thorough examination of the crucifiction scenery, the anatomy and delicate deatailes of the body on the cross.  The cross was first placed on the grave of Menyhért Takács (1861-1933) founder of the Premonstrant church in Gödöllő in 1935. After Menyhért Takács's body was transported to Jászóvár, the cross remained in the Premonstrant cemetery (founded in 1927) in Gödöllő. The cemetery can be approached on foot from Szent István University's strand.
