The Statue of Ignác Török

Török Ignác street
Török Ignác (1795-1949), a Gödöllő born General in the Hungarian National Defense Army became a martyr at the famous rebel execution of Arad (now part of Romania). He was sent to Vienna, Austria to learn. After graduating as an artificer officer he came back to Hungary to teach people like Arthur Görgey and György Klapka. He made a brilliant career in his life. From January 1849 he became a general and had a crucial role in defense in the War of Independence.  General Török was captured following the repression of the Hungarian National Army and executed together with 12 fellow generals in Arad. The town of Gödöllő erected a statue in memory of the martyr Ignác Török. The statue is the work of László Csikász, a major sculptor. The bronze statue stands at the entrance of Ignác Török Secondary Grammar School inaugurated in 1955. The commemorative day for the Arad martyrs is held at the statue on 6 October each year.
